News from the New Haven Unified School District

 

Headed for College

More than 80 percent of the Class of 2008 at James Logan High School

planned to enroll this fall in college, according to statistics provided

by Barbara Hart of the College and Career Center. Of the 947 students

who were on the graduation check-out list, 354 students (37 percent)

planned to enroll in a four-year university or college, and 416 students

(44 percent) planned to enroll in a two-year school.

 

School Board Candidates Forum is Wednesday

Candidates for the New Haven Board of Education will answer questions

Wednesday night (Oct. 1) at a forum sponsored by the League of Women

Voters. Two incumbents, Jonas Dino and Kevin Harper, and two

challengers, Michelle Matthews and Karen Yifru, are vying for three

seats on the District*s five-member governing body. A fifth candidate

whose name will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot, Sarabjit Cheema, has

withdrawn from the race.

 

The forum will be at the Educational Services Center, 34200

Alvarado-Niles Road, starting at 7 p.m. It will be shown live on Union

City Cable Channel 27 and rebroadcast at 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays

through Nov. 3.

 

Superintendent Search Update

The search for a new Superintendent moves ahead this week after 19

candidates submitted applications through the California School Boards

Association (CSBA) by Monday*s deadline. The Board will review all

applications, and receive feedback from a CSBA review team that also

will go through the applications, before meeting in closed session next

Tuesday, Oct. 7, to determine which candidates to interview.

 

The individuals whom the Board wants to consider will be screened by

CSBA then interviewed by both the Board and a 20-member Superintendent

Search Advisory Council, representing District stakeholders, on Thursday

and Friday, Oct. 16 and 17. The Board will conduct final interviews

Saturday, Oct. 18.

 

*Roy Williams Day*

Union City Councilmembers last week designated Friday, Nov. 7 as *Roy

Williams Day* and presented a key to Deborah Williams, mother of the

former Logan student-athlete who has gone on to enjoy a Pro Bowl career

with the Dallas Cowboys. His return to Logan will include two

assemblies, where he will speak to the student body about how he

overcame learning disabilities, the unveiling of a campus mural and an

evening banquet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

 

Tickets to the banquet, priced at $60, are now on sale. Call or e-mail

Adult School Flea Market

The New Haven Adult School is inviting vendors and other sellers to

participate in a Flea Market and Open House on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 8

a.m. to 1 p.m. Selling spaces are $15. For more information or to get an

Names *n* Notes

The District will launch its new web site Wednesday at

www.nhusd.k12.ca.us * The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

program is getting a boost, as New Haven teachers are being offered a

series of classes on differentiated instruction to support GATE

students. The classes, being offered through Santa Clara University,

start in October  * A group of students from Vince Rosato*s  class in

Room 15 at Searles Elementary attended Congressman Pete Stark's most

recent *Town Hall* meeting in Union City, to thank the Congressman

for his role in wildlife refuge and Social Security legislation. *

Parent Project Jr., a joint effort with Union City Youth & Family

Services designed to provide *loving solutions for families,* will

begin an eight-week session Wednesday, Oct. 15. Classes, for parents of

children 5-10, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Dec. 10. A

Parent Project Sr. class, for families with children 10 and older, will

start Thursday, Nov. 6. More information about either program is

available by calling Kristie Potter at 675-5217. * Gandhi Day 2008, a

free program of music, art, skits, essays and testimonials to promote

world non-violence and peace, will celebrated this Saturday, Oct. 4. The

event will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Park Theater, 37411 Fremont

Blvd., Fremont. More information is available at:
